Invisalign can be an effective way to correct dental misalignment without the hassles that accompany traditional metal braces. However, in order for Invisalign to succeed, you need to adhere to some rules! What are the basic do’s and don’ts of this treatment? Continue reading below to find out.
Do Wear Your Aligners for 20 – 22 Hours Daily
Invisalign only works when you are wearing it! You must keep your aligners in place for at least 20 – 22 hours every day in order for your teeth to move as planned. Remove them only for meals, for drinking anything other than plain water, and for your oral hygiene routine. Many patients use an app, like TrayMinder, to help them stay on target with wearing their aligners.
Do Clean Your Teeth and Aligners Thoroughly
Maintaining the cleanliness of both your teeth and aligners can do a lot to protect your oral health. Brush and floss after each meal, before you reinsert your aligners. This helps to fight bacteria and prevent discoloration. At least once a day, use a toothbrush and mild cleaning agent to thoroughly clean your aligners. You can also use Invisalign cleaning crystals to soak your aligners daily.
Do Attend All Orthodontic Appointments
It is important that you keep up with all your scheduled Invisalign appointments. These regular checkups, which may happen every 6 – 8 weeks, allow your dentist to monitor your progress and resolve any issues that may come up.
Do Not Eat or Drink While Wearing Your Aligners
The only thing you should consume while wearing your aligners is plain water. Foods and colored beverages can stain or damage the aligners and may trap particles against your teeth, which could increase your risk of tooth decay, bad breath, and other oral health issues.
Do Not Lose Track of Your Aligners
The removability of Invisalign aligners is a great feature, but there is always the risk that you could lose track of one! In order to keep mishaps to a minimum, always store your aligners in their case when you are not using them. Also, never wrap them in a napkin while you are eating; you might accidentally throw them away!
Do Not Ignore Your Dentist’s Instructions
Your dental care team will provide you with instructions to help your Invisalign treatment go as planned. For example, you might be directed to use certain cleaning products, wear rubber bands, and take other steps to support your orthodontic journey. Following their advice as closely as possible will do much to keep your treatment on track.
Invisalign requires some adjustments to your routine. Be careful to follow basic do’s and don’ts of the treatment so you can enjoy a smooth orthodontic journey.
