What Are CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a restoration that is designed to fit over the entire portion of a tooth that is visible above the gumline. Its job can be to restore the tooth’s function and appearance, as well as protect it against further damage. We often recommend crowns in cases where teeth are cracked, decayed, or severely worn down.

Traditionally, dental crowns are made in third-party dental laboratories. CEREC crowns, though, are made in-office with the help of CAD/CAM technology. Our in-house milling unit creates the crowns out of top-quality ceramic, which is both durable and aesthetically pleasing.

The Process of Getting a CEREC Same-Day Dental Crown

The CEREC process usually goes like this:

  • We prepare the tooth by reshaping it so it will fit well beneath its crown. Often, this involves removing some of its enamel.
  • We scan the tooth with digital impression technology.
  • We use advanced software to design the crown, which we then send to our in-house ceramic milling unit.
  • After the milling unit creates the crown, we ensure that it meets our expectations before we permanently attach it to the tooth.

From beginning to end, the CEREC process takes just a few hours. Very often, it can be completed in a single appointment.

Benefits of CEREC Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns

Some of the most noteworthy benefits of CEREC crowns include:

  • Save time. You can avoid multiple trips to our office.
  • No need for a temporary crown. Temporary crowns can be inconvenient and not as sturdy as permanent ones.
  • No messy manual impressions. The CEREC process is digital, so there is no need for the use of uncomfortable trays and goopy impression materials.
  • Beautiful results. CEREC crowns are made of material that closely resembles natural tooth enamel.
  • With proper care, a CEREC crown has the potential to last for 10 years or longer.
  • Despite the advanced technology involved, CEREC crowns are usually comparable in price to those that are made via traditional methods.
